Varicose veins: warning signs!

Varicose veins are inflamed veins that affect the functioning of the blood circulation to the heart as a result of the disease known as Venous Insufficiency.

Like with any other medical condition, prevention and early diagnosis are key to avoiding health complications that in the case of varicose veins can include bleeding, discoloration of the skin, ulcers, and in extreme cases the formation of blood clots that can travel to the internal system and cause greater risks.

The appearance of thin veins

Are veins that can be seen on the surface of the skin, better known as “Spider Veins”.

Large, thick veins

Are veins can be seen under the surface of the skin.

Signs and symptoms

  • Swelling of the ankles and feet.
  • Pain, heaviness or excessive tiredness in the legs.
  • Stabbing pain or cramps in the legs, especially at night.
  • Itching, especially in the lower part of the leg and on the ankles. Sometimes this symptom is incorrectly diagnosed as dry skin.
  • Change in skin color on the area where the varicose vein is located.
