Sports and Varicose Veins

Being active and exercising is the primary recommendation for preventing health problems such as poor circulation. However, for some athletes, a continuous practice can affect the return blood flow and cause the appearance of Varicose Veins.

High impact exercises:

Tennis, soccer, and basketball are high-impact sports in which the players regularly hit the ground hard when they jump or run. The players’ legs also support additional weight for long periods. All this increases the pressure in their veins and can cause the appearance of
Varicose Veins.

Varicose veins and soccer:

For example, in soccer players run for two halves of 45 minutes each. These periods are very prolonged, with a high cardiac requirement in which the players are in constant movement. This exercise itself is very demanding in the legs and veins of athletes. They are also exposed to intense physical contact between players, falls, blows in the shins, ankles, and feet, which are areas sensitive to the formation of Varicose Veins.

Varicose veins are also common in men. Between 35% and 45% of those affected are male.

High-risk sports:

  • Lifting weights:

The effort that is made to lift excessive weight can damage the valves of the veins.

  • Athletics:

Standing for long periods can cause the blood to return and stagnate.

  • Tennis and basketball:

These sports require constant running and standing for prolonged periods.

For those who practice any of these sports, and begin to see Spider Veins on their legs, or experience symptoms of pain, itching, burning in the legs or feet, it is essential to have a medical consultation with a specialist to evaluate the health of their veins and prevent any circulatory disease.
