Dr. Ron Mark “The vein doctor” answers

On many occasions, comments or the opinion of others about a disease manages to hold so much power that it becomes a truth that we may all come to believe.

There are different myths about Varicose Veins that cause some people not to treat this condition in time, putting their health at risk.

Here are some of these myths:

  • Varicose Veins are an aesthetic condition, not a medical condition:

Varicose veins are inflamed veins that are not correctly performing their function of transporting blood back to the heart. This deficiency makes the veins visible in the legs, causing them to lose their original appearance. However, this reason is not enough to believe that they are only an aesthetic problem and not a medical one.

  • If I am a man, I should not worry:

Another belief is that varicose veins are a disease exclusive to women; however, a high percentage of men can also develop venous insufficiency due to inheritance or work-related activities.

  • It only affects older women:

There is a common idea that venous insufficiency only affects women after age 50, but varicose veins can appear even at age 20.

The recommendation is to consult a specialist as soon as the first symptoms or signs of dilated veins appear to avoid complications.

Varicose veins are dilated veins that are perceived under the surface area of the skin as a result of the circulatory disease called venous insufficiency.

If you experience frequently and progressively any of the following symptoms: Sensation of pain or heaviness in the legs, burning, night cramps, ankle swelling, or itching, it is your body telling you that something is not working well with its circulation. Be aware and visit your varicose veins specialist.
